MARY ELLEN STUARTFAMILY AND RESIDENTIAL CARE ADVISORMary Ellen is the Family and Residential Care Advisor for the National Shattering Silence Coalition (NSSC) and a dedicated advocate for the implementation of high-quality long-term care models. Following her brother’s schizophrenia diagnosis in 1988, Mary Ellen experienced firsthand the devastating lack of emergency infrastructure and long-term residential options for those living with severe brain disorders (SBD). Her work is driven by a mission to replace the current "crisis-only" system with one defined by medical stability and peer-supported community living.
Residential Care & Board Leadership As a member of the Board of Directors for the John Henry Foundation in Santa Ana, California, Mary Ellen oversees a specialized residential model that serves as a gold standard for SBD care. Her expertise focuses on the "price differential" and accessibility gaps in residential treatment, advocating for facilities that provide comprehensive medication management, peer interaction, and immeasurable life enrichment. She is a proponent of the "Family-Foundation" partnership, believing that active family involvement is the cornerstone of successful long-term recovery. Advocacy & Strategic Support Since joining NSSC in 2019, Mary Ellen has played a vital role in the coalition’s internal operations, including managing the documentation and minutes for the monthly National Members Meetings. By bridging the gap between clinical residential needs and family-led advocacy, she provides NSSC with essential insights into the housing crisis facing the SMI population. Mary Ellen remains a tireless voice for the creation of well-designed emergency plans and affordable, quality residential services that allow individuals to grow and thrive with dignity. |
