Dr. Cathy Bullock is a dedicated advocate for individuals and families impacted by severe mental illness and serves as the National Shattering Silence Coalition’s State Policy Director for the State of Iowa.
Cathy’s mother suffered from untreated severe bipolar disorder/schizoaffective disorder, so she is familiar with the devastating impact untreated severe mental illness can have on families. In her leadership position as Policy Director, Cathy is dedicated to educating people about psychosis, the urgency for the availability of medically necessary treatment, and removing the systemic barriers created by laws that hurt families and individuals with severe mental illnesses or no-fault brain illnesses. Cathy holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a Master’s degree in Special Education, and a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus in special education. She is a recently retired special educator with over 40 years of varied teaching experience at both the K-12 and college levels. Cathy has also studied conflict resolution and understands the importance of clear communication and evidence-based education to promote positive change. She stays current in the literature on severe mental illness by reading journal articles, attending webinars, and communicating with other advocates. A strong grounding in evidence-based knowledge and a passion for improving the lives of individuals with severe mental illness and their families guide her advocacy. |
