OUR Indiana POLICY DIRECTOR

Meet david doerner

CONTACT DAVID
David Doerner is a dedicated mental health advocate whose work blends lived family experience, professional expertise, and a commitment to helping families navigate the complexities of the behavioral health system. He serves on the Board of Directors for NAMI Indiana and is an active member of the organization’s Public Policy Committee. His advocacy is grounded in becoming educated, building partnerships, and developing practical pathways for families seeking understanding, support, and effective treatment for loved ones with serious mental illness.

David is engaged with a wide range of state and national organizations, including the Treatment Advocacy Center, CureSZ Foundation, Shattering Silence Coalition, NAMI, the Hendricks County Health Partnership, Indiana Mental Health Roundtable and community organizations such as the Recovery Café / We Bloom network.

He has completed the Treatment Advocacy Center’s Advocacy Bootcamp, participates in local cross-agency initiatives, and collaborates with leaders across Indiana to advance policy discussions on serious mental illness, anosognosia, grave disability, crisis response, and care continuity.

A key focus of David’s work is supporting families as they navigate challenging systems—learning about legal processes, community resources, and evidence-based treatment frameworks. He has a growing interest in helping caregivers understand areas such as guardianship, emergency intervention, and outpatient treatment options, and he is actively exploring innovative ways to use AI to strengthen caregiver support, advocacy, education, and daily problem-solving.

David and his wife Lisa volunteer regularly in NAMI in the Lobby at Riley Children’s Hospital, offering encouragement, education, and hope to families facing difficult mental-health-related crises. Through his advocacy, David aims to connect people with trusted information, build stronger statewide partnerships, and help ensure that Indiana families never feel alone as they navigate serious mental illness.
