John Nutting serves as our Maine State Director, bringing nearly two decades of legislative leadership and a deep-seated commitment to psychiatric care reform. A veteran of the Maine State Legislature for 18 years, John has been the driving force behind some of the state’s most impactful mental health policies.
Most notably, John was the primary author and sponsor of Maine’s Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) law, officially known as the "Progressive Treatment Program" (PTP). His vision in crafting this legislation has provided a vital legal pathway for individuals with serious mental illness to receive sustained, community-based care, significantly reducing the cycles of hospitalization and incarceration. John’s dedication to the PTP extends far beyond the legislative chamber. He remains involved on a daily basis as a frontline advocate, personally guiding families through the complexities of the law to ensure their loved ones can access the treatment they need to thrive. His unique dual perspective—as both a lawmaker and a family consultant—makes him one of the state's leading experts on navigating Maine's mental health system. We are honored to have John leading our efforts in Maine. We encourage family members, providers, and advocates to reach out to him directly for guidance on accessing treatment under the AOT law and to learn how the Progressive Treatment Program can support a journey toward stability and recovery. |
“Being a member of the NSSC coalition is very important to me. Being able to compare how one State successfully manages individuals with anosognosia with our State has been invaluable, and is helping to improve our laws. When we can say another state does such and such, and it is has worked makes changing things here so much easier!"
