OUR michigan POLICY DIRECTOR

Meet CARLA VAN FAROWE

CONTACT CARLA
Carla Van Farowe is driven by a singular goal: to maximize her positive impact and guarantee quality education for everyone. She joined NSSC as a State Policy Director because she believes quality education is a human right and that the global community has a responsibility to serve even the most vulnerable populations.

Carla is the co-author of 'Sustainable Development Goals 4 (SDG4): Quality Education at the Sherpa Institute'. She firmly believes that SDG4 is the essential key to unlocking all other Sustainable Development Goals, benefiting humanity as a whole. The Sherpa Institute provides the intelligent, creative, and robust community necessary to drive the achievement of these ambitious goals.

Carla balances multiple roles spanning local and international education. She is the founder of Beyond Brick & Mortar LLC, an international education consultancy, and serves as Treasurer for the Benzie chapter of DKG International Society for Key Women Educators. Locally, she teaches middle school students at both Benzie County Central Schools and the Interlochen Center for the Arts in rural Benzie County, Michigan.

Carla brings 33 years of experience to education, spanning continents and roles. Her international career includes serving as the Director of Learning and Assessment in Hong Kong, a curriculum and assessment coordinator in the UAE, and a science and English teacher trainer in Qatar. She began her career as a secondary English and science teacher in Michigan.

In addition to these roles, Carla is an expert in school accreditation, having served as an accreditation facilitator and school preparer for WASC, AdvancED/Cognia, NEASC/CIS, and KHDA/DSIB evaluations and inspections. She further demonstrated leadership as a member of the AdvancED Michigan State Council, where she led evaluations, served on teams, and approved reviews.

Carla's academic credentials include a BS in English and Science, an MA in Communications, and K-12 Administration certification. She has also completed doctoral coursework toward an Education Leadership degree.
